Is there a recommended amount of music that we should all be listening to? Well it turns out, if you’re looking for a pronounced change in mood there is (a bare minimum at least)! Lyz Cooper, founder of the British Academy of Sound Therapy, recently explored the question of just how much music it takes for you to feel the therapeutic effects. Depending on what your target outcome is (eg. happy, relaxed, focused), the recommended minimum time prescribed varies between 9 and 13 minutes to get you in the zone. You can read through the results in the table below:
Some other interesting findings:
“Overall, we found that 89% of people thought that music was essential for their health and/or wellbeing.”
“Of the 7581 people tested, 90.15% used music to relax, 81.80% to make them happy, 46.5% to process and/or release sadness, and 32.53% to aid concentration”
You can find a more detailed breakdown of each category here on the British Academy of Sound Therapy’s website, as well as the entire original study here.
